1950 Healey Silverstone

Coupe des Alpes winner 1951

There were two generations of the Silverstone, designated D-Types and E-Types, in addition to two prototype 'X' models. The improved E-Type, with a wider body and more comfortable cockpit, was introduced in 1950.

Chassis E 76, one of the more desirable E-types was registered in May 1950. The original buff log book that still exists and the colour is listed as green chrome, a highly appealing shade that it wears to this day. Bought new by Edgar Wadsworth who went on to compete with Cyril Corbishley in no less than three gruelling Alpine rallies from 1950 to 1953, with a class win and a ‘Coupe des Alpes’ in 1951. E 76 also was an entrant at other motor races including Charterhall International, 1953 Silverstone six hour relay race, Its next owner Heyworth continued with competitive endeavours with participation in the 1954 L.A.C. Morecambe Rally. Heyworth enjoyed the car until 1972 it changed hands for just a year before passing to Patrick Betts of Framlingham. Betts undertook an extensive restoration, following a period of rest which was finished at the end of the 90’s.

E 76 was acquired in 1998 by an enthusiast in Sussex who carried out further regular and sympathetic work, both cosmetic, a new hood, tonneau and side screens and frequent servicing, the results of which are apparent in this highly usable and eligible example, anything from the Mille Miglia to other prestigious historic rallies.

A large file of correspondence is present complete with evocative period pictures of the car in action on snowcapped mountains. Powerful, torquey motor, full weather equipment, great value and excellent provenance.
